Agios Ioannis in the Cliff

Agios Ioannis in the cliff

According to oral tradition, Saint John the Evangelist started writing the ‘Apocalypse’ on Kythira but he was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he completed his work.
Above Kapsali, in the steep cliff face, is the cave where Saint John lived. In later years, a small church was built in the cave, dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist. It is very worthwhile visiting this cave, not only because of the church but also to enjoy the breathtaking views of Kapsali Bay and the castle in Chora.
During this summer the Saint John Cave is open daily (except on Saturday) from 8.30 am to 2.30 pm. On Sundays the cave is open from 5.30 pm to 8.30 pm.
We advise you to park your car near the campsite in Kapsali. From there you walk uphill along a beautiful path to the cave.
