Surprising Diakofti

Last Wednesday, in preparation for the new hiking season, I walked together with Alekos Kastrissios through and around Diakofti, Kythira’s port village. Alekos, born and raised in Kastrisianika, is now retired and lives in Diakofti. He walks a lot and he likes to share his love for the island and its history with others. Therefore it was an honour that he came to visit me in my office last month. We agreed to do some walks together, starting of course with Diakofti. In my walking guide ‘Kythira on foot’, I already have a short walk in Diakofti; the one to the Chousti-cave, but according to Alekos, Diakofti has much more to offer. So we went to the salt pans, a beautiful area with a huge variety of rocks, small pools and steep cliffs. We also saw impressive caves, which I visited for the first time: one with beautiful coloured stalactites, the other with remains of a Minoan sanctuary. The hiking tour was awesome, with Alekos’s interesting stories and the lovely lunch made by his wife. Our walking appointment for next week is already there…
